Our Horses

The herd at AHT is ever changing, expanding and growing, and sometimes shrinking.

We've had some success stories, and sadly we've had to say goodbye to some.
Each special soul that we encounter will never be forgotten.

Although the horses at AHT can no longer be ridden, some of them would make excellent companions for just the right person. Horses marked below with an asterisk beside their name are eligible for adoption. For more information, please contact us by sending an email to adoptions@ahorsetale.org. Please include your phone number.

Many people choose to be a member as well as sponsoring one of our horses for as little as $20 per month. For more information about sponsoring, please click here. We also have a group sponsorship program. For more information, please about sponsoring either individually or as a group, please here.

Buddy
25 years old

Buddy is A Horse Tale's first rescue. He was originally saved by RR Refuge in Ontario. He arrived at our farm on February 22, 2013 from Hawkesbury, where he had been fostered out. Buddy was 14 years old, and had been very well trained in his past. He was a stallion until a few months before arriving at A Horse Tale.

In his later years, he hadn't been socialized, so interacting with other horses was initially an issue. The stallion mentality made it hard for him, as he had a lot of energy. During the time we have had him, he has been showered with love and affection, and the change in him is unbelievable. He is loving, gentle, and a real pleasure to be around and he has a remarkable sense around kids. His best friend is Rocky.

Eddie
18 years old

On January 18, 2022, AHT welcomed Eddie, a 16-year-old Dutch Warmblood. He was a competitive show horse and won the Canadian Royal in 2019. He is 16.3 hands tall.

Eddie has Cushing's as well as Navicular, a chronic degenerative condition that can cause lameness in the front legs. His former owner purchased him back, fearing he would be forced to continue competing. Unable to keep him, they considered euthanizing him to protect his best interests and prevent further pain. Luckily, they found AHT!

Eddie is very curious, calm, and social. His best friend is Jesse.

Goliath
14 years old

On November 5, 2023, in collaboration with the Montreal SPVM Cavalry Unit, AHT Rescue welcomed Goliath, a 14-year-old gelding.

Goliath is a Canadian but, unlike his fellow Canadian paddock mates, he has not a trace of white.

Goliath’s career included working in many crowd control situations, helping Montreal’s police ensure peace was maintained during various situations.

Goliath suffers from dropped rear fetlock which prevented him from being ridden any longer and therefore having to retire at AHT along with his former comrades Patriote and Sunny.

AHT is honoured and proud to be recognized by Montreal’s SPVM Cavalry Unit to care for their now retired horses.

Welcome, Goliath! We know you will do well at AHT and enjoy your much-deserved retirement.

His best friends are Patriote and Sunny.

Jesse
30 years old

On June 19, 2023, AHT Rescue was proud to welcome Jesse, a former Montreal calèche horse, through its gates.

The 29-year-old Belgian worked as a calèche horse for 25 years, starting at the age of 4. Although the industry came to an end in Montreal at the end of 2019, Jesse was still being boarded downtown, serving at various private events.

Jesse came to AHT suffering from arthritis as well as hoof and hip issues, which were a result of his years of faithful service, entertaining tourists daily along the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal.

Since his arrival, Jesse has undergone treatments and support to help ease him into a safe retirement. AHT will do all it can to provide the care he deserves after years of hard work.

Welcome to AHT Rescue, Jesse! We know your cuddly, calm, and affectionate demeanour will surely win anyone’s heart.

His best friend is Eddie.

Maya
24 years old

Maya arrived on February 7, 2021 with her friend Zach at approximately 18 years old. This beautiful Belgian cross mare is now calling AHT Rescue her forever home, after working four years in Montreal’s calèche industry. An extremely sweet girl who will win you over with the bat of her eye lashes or long giraffe like legs. No wonder Zach has fallen for this beauty!

Molly*
26 years old

On January 17, 2023, AHT Rescue welcomed Molly, an adorable 25-year-old bay coloured pony mare measuring about 12 hands. Now retired, she came from a stable where she worked for years with kids during their riding lessons. As with most horses that find their way to AHT Rescue, she suffers from a couple of health issues that required immediate care upon her arrival.

On AHT's assessment visits, Molly appeared to get along very well with her paddock mates and was well mannered with our handlers.

Upon arrival, she was very curious about her new herd, as they were about her. She has the cutest little nicker when she’s expecting food or calling for the other horses!

Her best friend is Ruby.

Patriote
17 years old

On February 2, 2022, AHT Rescue welcomed Patriote to our herd and family!

After patrolling the streets and serving the citizens of Montreal for four years, this 14-year-old Canadian gelding retired with honour from the Montreal Service de police de la Ville de Montréal - SPVM police force in April 2021.

Patriote is insulin resistant, which caused him to have bouts of laminitis. His owner could not support the level of care needed while working full-time and raising a family and found AHT. Patriote also has arthritis in his hocks as well as Cushing’s Disease, an endocrine disorder common in older horses.

With Patriote’s background and calm demeanour, AHT Rescue is looking forward to his new life with us. Once he is in better condition, we are confident he will find his place and we hope he will become a pivotal addition to our AHT Experience Program.
His best friends are Sunny and Goliath.

Princess
21 years old

Princess arrived on May 12, 2021 at the age of a 18. The Belgian mare had a long road ahead of her but has flourished with the love, dedication, and care given to her by all at AHT.

Multiple daily soups, along with supplements, veterinary visits and care, her future is bright. Upon her arrival, it was clear she needed dental work to help correct her overgrown teeth, which along with insufficient nutrients, caused her severe weight loss.

Her best friend is Zephyr.

Rocky
17 years old

Rocky Bayama raced into the hearts of AHT members on September 11, 2016 at the age of nine years old. Rocky is a Standardbred gelding who stands at 17 hands tall. He is a a Bay, with two white socks on his rear legs.

Rocky spent the first part of his life as a race horse on the track. He was a pacer, and did quite well, but an off-track fracture to his ankle bone signaled the end of his racing career. His owner placed him with a young lady who was riding him for a couple of years. When she could no longer keep him, the owner reached out to us and we agreed to take him.

He has a wonderful personality, loves kids, and is very personable.

His best friend is Buddy.

Ruby*
21 years old

Following a two-hour transportation, this beautiful Canadian cross made her first steps into her new home at AHT on November 30, 2022 at approximately 20 years old.

Ruby was very curious and obviously noticed by the rest of herd upon her arrival. A few of the boys took particular interest in this beauty and it’s easy to see why!

Her best friend is Molly.

Sunny
19 years old

On June 5, 2023, AHT welcomed a very special horse named Sunny. Sunny was an 18-year-old purebred Canadian gelding, and much like his former colleague Patriote, he too has been honourably retired from the SPVM cavalry.

Sunny measures 15.3 hands and weighs approx. 1300 lbs. He joined the SPVM cavalry in 2009 when he was 4 years old and provided continued police service for 14 years. He retired in the summer of 2022 at the home of his police partner after suffering from a ligament injury. Already caring for several geriatric horses on her hobby farm and with insufficient barn space to provide year-round boarding for Sunny, his owner decided to surrender him to AHT Rescue in hopes that he could enjoy some great retirement moments with his old work buddy Patriote.

As with all horses surrendered to AHT, Sunny was in quarantine for approximately 14 days to help with the initial integration period but is now in the same paddock as Patriote.

His best friends are Patriote and Goliath.

Ulysses (Uly)
RIP - January 19 at 27 years old

Ulysses (aka Uly) was a 19-year-old Percheron when he arrived at A Horse Tale on February 15, 2016. At about 18 hands or so, he was officially our biggest horse to date. Ulysses came into the Montreal Calèche industry around the year 2010. Prior to that, he was a working horse on a farm. Before joining us at AHT, Uly developed ring bone in his front left hoof and so was put on stall rest, along with monitored exercise in the summer of 2015.

Through regular visits by AHT reps to the Calèche stables, Uly was monitored to see how his situation progressed. In the winter of 2016, an agreement was struck to move Ulysses into retirement at AHT. With his long bangs flowing and substantial presence, he was a beauty to behold.

Zach
28 years old

Zach arrived on February 7, 2021 at approximately 23 years of age. The Belgian had been working in Montreal’s Calèche industry for the 20 years before enjoying his retirement at AHT Rescue. Zach is a handsome and caring boy who is very curious and eager to explore new adventures in his new home at AHT.

He’s also protective over his best friend Maya.

Zephyr
25 years old

On January 18th 2018, Zephyr arrived at A Horse Tale rescue at the age of 19. This beautiful chestnut Paint horse, with gorgeous white legs and a soft white mane, stands handsomely at 15.1 hands tall. He has a cute quirk since a young age where his tongue sticks out just a little. When in a paddock, this playful soul appears younger than his age; always looking to play, and can be quite vocal at times.

The recently retired Zephyr spent most of his life as a beginner school horse. He also trained for 2nd level dressage. He was diagnosed with arthritis in his hind legs and has a recurring sore on his right elbow, which is closely monitored and treated by the AHT volunteers.

Although he adapted very well to AHT, Zephyr is an anxious horse who prefers to have a friend close by. He attached quite quickly to his indoor barn companion Chocolate, then Cheyenne but is now sharing a paddock with his new best friend Princess.
