Courage, Strength, Devotion, LoveThese are some pretty strong words but they represent a very strong soul.On August 8, our dear Balou said farewell to everyone who he cared deeply about, both two and four-legged friends. Before arriving at AHT, life for Balou started as many large horses do, working. We are told that Balou (or Bill, as he was known) worked in the logging industry, pulling large fallen trees from the forest. Always eager to keep working, eating as much as four full bales of hay per day and weighing close to 2600 pounds, he would be paired up with the strongest equal they had. He was a sight to behold. Bill later moved into doing wagon rides, where again he was paired with a companion. Just before arriving at AHT, Bill was renamed to Balou and was tried as a carriage horse in Montreal. As these are single horse carriages, he didn’t do so…

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]A part of A Horse Tale Rescue’s objective is finding forever homes for rescued horses. We’ve had a few success stories but are always looking for more. Though they cannot be ridden, A Horse Tale Rescue currently has two wonderful rescues, who would make excellent companion horses. And, as luck would have it, they are best pals! Smouch is a 19-year-old Palomino gelding who’s name describes him perfectly. He is kind, friendly and gentle but has a bit of a mischievous side. We’ve also learned recently, while bringing him in from the pasture, that he responds to a sharp whistle. He has a conformation problem with his front knees, which is why he cannot be ridden. He does not currently take medication for his condition. Rocky is his 11-year-old side-kick who follows Smouch’s lead. He is curious, affectionate and is a sight to behold when he runs. Rocky was…

It was installed in the new extension our President has been building with money raised from our many fundraisers. The horses are loving taking turns eating in the shade and being misted by cool water. Seen here, our calèche retirees Blanco and Ulysses enjoying breakfast under the refreshing mist, while Balou watches from the shade of the back barn.  Saturday and Sunday, all our horses were hosed down by volunteers. Our snow-white Percherons, as well as our 34-year-old Belgian Draft, had to be showered off several times. Imagine how much work this misting hose will save our overheated volunteers, too! Please join us at our sixth annual BBQ…

On April 29th, A Horse Tale Rescue welcomed Danny, an Arabian cross Quarter horse gelding. He is in his late 20s and measures 14 hands high. This gentle boy has a trusting nature and has adapted to his new routine extremely well, despite some health considerations including blindness in his left eye and limited sight in the right. We, too, have adapted to his habits; like how he enjoys dunking his hay in a water bucket when he eats as well as the symptoms of Stringhalt, a neurological issue which causes him to lift his hind legs quite high as he walks. As he is underweight and has muscle loss due to his age, he has been receiving a “soup” supplement at suppertime, in addition to his morning breakfast bowl. We’ve seen…

On the evening of Wednesday, March 7 th , 2018 at the age of 31, our beautiful Palomino Quarter Horse, Tara Belle, stepped over the rainbow bridge to join all our AHT friends who have gone before her. She was calm, trusting and felt neither stress nor pain throughout. Tara Belle taught us so much about how horses can react to sudden change and how they can learn to trust despite it. AHT would like to thank all of our members for giving her the best care and endless unconditional love possible.  Saying good-bye is always so difficult. You will be missed Tara Belle.

Today AHT hosted Vanier College students studying animal care. As part of their curriculum, they are required to have hands on experience with large animals and they reached out to AHT. We were more than happy to help these bright young, budding animal care specialists! Our horses were great and everyone left with huge smiles. There were 30 students in total and many are hoping to return to AHT as new members! See Buddy helping out with hoof picking and brushing. Rocky and Smooch stayed very still for vitals (heart rate, respiratory, etc).   Smooch also helped out with leg and tail bandaging. Balou and Jack helped with haltering and leading. What a great herd we have! It was clear in their smiles as they walked the pasture for some close ups with our beauties in the fall sun that today was a success! Thank you to our barn management team…
