Courage, Strength, Devotion, LoveThese are some pretty strong words but they represent a very strong soul.On August 8, our dear Balou said farewell to everyone who he cared deeply about, both two and four-legged friends. Before arriving at AHT, life for Balou started as many large horses do, working. We are told that Balou (or Bill, as he was known) worked in the logging industry, pulling large fallen trees from the forest. Always eager to keep working, eating as much as four full bales of hay per day and weighing close to 2600 pounds, he would be paired up with the strongest equal they had. He was a sight to behold. Bill later moved into doing wagon rides, where again he was paired with a companion. Just before arriving at AHT, Bill was renamed to Balou and was tried as a carriage horse in Montreal. As these are single horse carriages, he didn’t do so…

On April 29th, A Horse Tale Rescue welcomed Danny, an Arabian cross Quarter horse gelding. He is in his late 20s and measures 14 hands high. This gentle boy has a trusting nature and has adapted to his new routine extremely well, despite some health considerations including blindness in his left eye and limited sight in the right. We, too, have adapted to his habits; like how he enjoys dunking his hay in a water bucket when he eats as well as the symptoms of Stringhalt, a neurological issue which causes him to lift his hind legs quite high as he walks. As he is underweight and has muscle loss due to his age, he has been receiving a “soup” supplement at suppertime, in addition to his morning breakfast bowl. We’ve seen…

It was with great sadness that A Horse Tale learned about the passing of the first horse that we adopted out, sweet, sweet Macho.   Macho was born in Alberta in 2004 and came to live with his first owner at 8 months old. He was his little girl’s prince and was very loved, but his family moved in 2013 and were unable to take him with them. It was at this time that Macho joined his good friend Buddy at AHT. Macho spent 1 year and 3 months in our care until October of 2014, when he became AHT ‘s first horse ever to be adopted out. His new “mom” became Jackie Maye. Jackie loved and cared for Macho tremendously and gave him his forever home. In early 2015 it was discovered he had Uveitis and by March 2015, he had lost one eye. Shortly, after the operation life improved for Macho, but in August 2015 his disease started attacking…

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] It is with great sadness that AHT said goodbye to Caesar, this past Thursday night, August 27, 2015. A retired caleche horse, Caesar arrived at AHT’s barn in the cold of winter 2015, with a form of rectal cancer.  This meant that we knew he’d have limited time with us and so we promised to give him as much love and caring that we could. Unfortunately, his cancer progressed to the point where it got the better of him, and we had to say goodbye. From the very first day he arrived he made an impact on us. That bittersweet day that he arrived was the very same day that we said goodbye to Bud. In fact, our AHT logo was inspired by this picture of Caesar and Bud passing in the snow. Although Caesar wasn’t with us for very long he made a huge impact on all of us, with his…

A Horse Tale is in existence to give love and TLC to the horses that need and deserve it the most and although we can’t keep these horses with us forever, the time they spend with us is so precious and meaningful, that it really is the reason why our group exists. This past Sunday at 3:45 pm we lost our most precious beautiful Dolly. Dolly was a 35 year old white Percheron and she was the icon of our charity. She was our first Caleche Horse to come to our farm with her best friend Balou. The first time I ever met Dolly, she wasn’t working due to general age, the arthritis and pain in her legs. I wasn’t sure about her, she stared at me blankly while her friend Balou was full of life but nonetheless she was on her way to our farm for a journey we…

On January 12 2015, at 2 pm, we had to say a somber goodbye to a very precious horse on our farm. Bud, a nineteen year old Percheron, came to our farm on October 18, 2014 for some rest and relaxation after sustaining an injury to his hind leg. When he arrived he was as unsure of us as we were of him, pulling us around with his head held high ensuring all those around him that he was indeed bigger than everyone else in our herd, breaking our fences and causing a havoc around every corner.   However, as he settled into his new life his soul shined through more and more everyday. Although he always remained the big guy on the farm, we got to see the true Bud, gentle, peaceful, grateful, and kind. As time passed, he learned to love his new life and family, even if…

Do you love working with animals? Would like to help out a great cause? If so, then we certainly could use the help.  Our group is run on a 100% volunteer basis and our animals need us 24/7, so this means that help is always needed. If you or someone you that may know would like to learn what it takes to be part of A Horse Tale then come on out this weekend, when we’ll be having a “Horse Care” training session. The session will take place this coming Saturday (September 20th, 2014) between 2:30-3:30 PM.   At the session you can learn the basics of taking care of our herd such as feed schedules, horse handling, grooming basics and how you can become a regular part of their lives. while they become a part of yours in return. If you’d like to still learn, but can’t make it…
